Key features of the course

In Media Studies we cover a broad range of media products (adverts, film, TV, music, radio, computer games, magazines, news papers and social & participatory media) and take a critical look at media industries.

The theoretical framework that underpins Media Studies consists of the 4 key concepts: Media Language, Representation, Audiences and Industries. Students build an understanding of the concepts and how they inter-relate as well as researching into the social, cultural, historical and political contexts that influence and shape the media we all consume.

In Year 12, you will study for the Component 1 examination, developing key skills of analysis through extended written work and also in group discussions on issues from the legacy of slavery to feminist perspectives of music videos to the Post Modern concept of ‘hyper reality’. After the mock examination you will complete the production element of the A-Level for course work.

In Year 13, the focus will be on more in depth analysis of TV crime drama, YouTubers and online magazines. You will learn how to apply and evaluate key media theories and study how the mainstream media differs from independent  alternatives.

Entry
Requirements:

Minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4, with at least a grade 5 in English Language.

What could this course
lead on to?

Media Studies students are found in many walks of life. You may choose a creative route and pursue a career in TV, music or film; you may choose to develop your technical skills and go into software development or graphic design; you may take a more literary path and train to be a Journalist.

 

Media Studies has many transferable skills and will allow you to develop your critical reasoning, debating, analytical, creative and collaborative learning skills; all vital for progression to Higher Education and employment.

and careers

The Creative Industries are booming right now in the UK; currently on track to create 1 million new jobs by 2030.

The course will support access to degree courses in: Media Studies, Teaching, Journalism, TV & Film Production, Film Practices, Cultural Studies, Animation, Digital Art, and many more. Possibly leading to one of the career areas listed above.

What type of student is this
course suitable for?

This course is suitable for anyone interested in understanding the media and how it influences our lives. It requires an inquiring and critical mind and an interest in current affairs, as being able to apply your knowledge to the real world is a crucial skill. Media Studies students need to be highly literate as there is a lot of reading and essay writing involved.

 

Media Studies complements other subjects such as Sociology, English, Music, Photography, Politics.

Assessment
Structure

It is important to understand the assessment structure of the course. What percent are the units ? Are they internally or externally assessed ? Are they exams or coursework?
